Is Jujutsu a contact sport?
In the real world yes. Many of the techniques used in Jujutsu are practiced with a partner, because of the effectiveness of the technique all students are trained to work with a compulsitory degree of control. Although sparring is occasionally used in classes, heavy or uncontrolled contact will not be tolerated, anyone found to have been bullying will be expelled. Although Jujutsu can be used in an offensive manner, it is intended as SELF DEFENSE using reasonable amount of force TO PROTECT ONESELF.
Are there Jujutsu competitions?
Yes and No. There are Jujutsu competitions, but the techniques we teach here are for the REAL WORLD. They are SHORT, SHARP and EXTREMELY EFFECTIVE. We do not enter tournaments or competitions. We prefer to practice the art as it was intended.
I have practiced at another martial art, will my grade be accepted?
If you have been graded in Jujutsu, Judo or Aikido at another dojo, we respect your learning records, however you will enter as an individual with experienced status at the beginners level in our dojo.
Do I have to wear a GI?
Not for the free instruduction class. You may wear any suitable clothing, such as a track suit, or sweats, or an old GI. At the time of registration a GI will be provided (upon size availability or it will be ordered) and must be worn clean for all classes.
What belts are there in Jujutsu?
At our dojo, our system start with a White Belt (beginner) followed after successful grading,Orange, Yellow, Green, Purple, 3 levels of Brown Belt, Sankyu, Nikkiu, Iku, Black Belt Okuiri, Black Belt Menkio, Mokuroku, Shihan.
How long does it take to get a Black Belt Okuiri?
We are proud to say that the syllabus is extensive and students must complete all grades to a HIGH LEVEL OF COMPETENCE. If a student completes all grades in a timely manner, and to an acceptable level, a Black Belt can be achieved in approximately 3 years. Generally, grading takes place every 3-4 months, depending on the grade level. Students will be demonstrate all the techniques taught during classes. Students must demonstrate a HIGH LEVEL OF COMPETENCE in each technique before passing the grade.
